The Florence-Lauderdale Public Library
is proud to announce the launch of OneBook, a new community-wide
reading program, aimed at bringing the entire Shoals community
together by reading a single book. The program begins
on Saturday, August 23, and continues through Saturday,
October 4.
This year, OneBook will feature John Grogan’s best-selling
memoir, Marley & Me, “the heartwarming
and unforgettable story of a family in the making and
the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really
matters in life” (Marleyandme.com). In order to
include Shoals readers of all ages, we will also feature
Marley, the youth version of the book, and the
picture book adaptation Bad Dog, Marley!
The OneBook program aims to actively engage the community
in the reading process. Throughout the six weeks of OneBook,
the FLPL will bring the message of Marley & Me to
life by hosting various pet-related events. On Saturday,
August 23, at 11:00 am, the program will kick off with
a Pet Blessing, sponsored by the Shoals Interfaith Council.
Later events in the program include film screenings, a
Dog Wash Day and Adoption Day by PAWS, memoir workshops,
and book discussions about Marley & Me. The library
will also welcome a wide range of special guests for OneBook.
During one event, veteran Wade Franks will discuss his
time in Vietnam with his military dog Little Joe and will
talk about the upcoming Alabama War Dog Memorial, while
another program will feature therapy dog Amadeus, who
will teach children how to safely approach and pet dogs.
The OneBook program will conclude with the library’s
featured guest Richard Cowdrey, illustrator of Bad Dog,
Marley!
